I’m not an Upper East Sider but when I’m in the mood for a burger and whiskey this neighborhood has two of my favorite spots. Whether I’m heading out for an evening with old friends or meeting someone new, I always look forward to hitting these spots up.
JG Melon is one of those places that has been around for ever. I believe it’s been operating under the same name since the 1970’s but I’ve also heard that the location has been a bar or restaurant in some form since the 1930s. The staff is a little crusty and it’s cash only but it’s all part of the charm. Get a burger, cottage fries and a beer and enjoy a slice of old New York.
After dinner you’ll be a short 10 minute walk from the Comic Strip. Just head north on 2nd avenue. In true comedy club form it’s musty a little sticky and rundown but the acts are great. Plenty of amazing comedians you’ve never heard of along side some hall of famers such as Adam Sandler and Jerry Seinfeld.
Just a couple blocks north of the Comic Strip you’ll find one of the best Scottish whiskey bars uptown. An impressive collection of whiskeys along with a very chill and knowledgeable staff make this a favorite. No frills vibe just the scotch, how I like it.
