Manhattan-Upper West Side

New York is home to many of the leading performing arts centers and schools in the world. The concentration of talent means that that you can find world class performances in any genre on nearly any night of the week. As a singer myself, friends and family visiting from out of town are often looking for recommendations on the best performances to attend apart from the typical Broadway shows. If you're looking for an amazing night of music, dance or theater but looking for a less touristy outing then this is your guide!

Emily R.Emily R.

Emily is a singer, teacher and mother who knows Manhattan. There are few things she enjoys more than spending a fall day in Central Park with her family. A close second is a tall coffee and a Brooklyn Blackout from Two Little Red Hens.

Start your evening with dinner and drinks at Blue Ribbon Sushi. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the 6 Columbus Hotel in Columbus Circle. There is a great rooftop bar if arrive early enough to enjoy a drink and views of the Manhattan skyline before the sunsets. The food is a delicious mix of traditional authentic Japanese dishes along with a few traditional American seafood and steak dishes. Best of all it's conviently located in Columbus Circle which is very accessible via a number of subway lines and just a short ten minute walk from Lincoln Center.

The Juilliard School is located the heart of Lincoln Center. It is widely regarded as one of the top performing arts schools in the world for music and dance. The list of notable students and faculty that have gone on to earn recognition in fields of dance, theater and music is to long to list but schools low acceptance rate of less than 7-8% of applicants means that the school develops top talent. The performances that the students produce are no exception. You will see the same caliber of artists performing as you will in any other venue across the city and typically for free or for a small fee. It's one of my favorite local tips to share!
