From Overture to Curtain Call

Manhattan-Midtown West

Catching a Broadway show is always at the top of the list of requests from family and friends when they visit. Making sure that evening includes a great place to grab dinner as well as a drink afterward is just as important. There are always a ton of great shows in rotation on Broadway. It’s harder to find a great place to grab a drink after the show in the heart of Midtown Manhattan that doesn’t feel over priced or overly touristy, thankfully I know just the place!

While there’s no shortage of restaurants in Midtown they often come in two very predictable forms. There are a ton of great steak houses and fancy restaurants full of corporate dinner parties and also a ton of very touristy spots with huge cavernous locations. Neither feel like that capture the best of the New York dining scene. I prefer Sushi of Gari when looking for a pre theater dinner. This is the midtown out post of a New York / Japan chain by Masatoshi “Gari” Sugio. So many creative dishes that blend a world of flavors and excellent sushi and located on 46th street it’s very accessible to almost any theater.

Three blocks north is the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where the Broadway show “Waitress” is showing. It doesn’t matter where you sit in the audience; all the seats have a great view of the show. It’s an intimate space and the architecture is beautiful. If you’re a fan of any of the cast make sure you stick around afterwards- sometimes they come out after the show for a meet & greet.

After the show when you’ve made your way through the theater doors and back on to the street you will inevitably look around and ask yourselves, “well is there anywhere to grab a drink around here”. You’ll look left and right and then be inclined to conclude, “nope”. Don’t worry. Head just a few blocks north to 52nd and 9th where you’ll find Casellula. It’s a small cozy space that is very un-Midtown and a great place to debrief after the show over wine and a few small plates. Also if you’re a lover of cheese, they have you covered.
